Fighting the Winter Blues

This morning while walking out to the car with my boys, we felt the tell-tale signs of autumn coming around the corner. We couldn’t help but become excited at the prospect of putting on a sweater before leaving the house. And what child can’t resist a tall pile of leaves waiting to be pounced on? In my reverie my thoughts also began to wander towards the effects of cold weather – chill, cold/flu, flu shots, cod liver oil, the blues, vitamins, etc. Let’s talk about that.

Perhaps as health conscious people we should probably think of ways to fortify our bodies as we enter into another season of cold and flu, from In to Out.

1)      Start with a clean slate. The brains behind Organic Beauty Vixen, Sherrell Dorsey, wrote an article about the different ways of cleansing for your body. Though there are many products on the market that aid in this, Sherrell suggests and I concur, keep it simple.

And I can’t leave this point without mentioning the distinct memory I have of my mother and grandmother calling me from the kitchen, “Ronda!! Come here, you need a dose of oil.” Cod liver oil to be exact. Contrary to my belief then, it was not punishment; they were actually on to something. And thank God, cod liver oil is now available in a pill.

2)      Next build yourself back up. Now that you’ve wiped yourself clean (pardon the pun), it’s time to re-populate the good flora inside your intestines. Good bacteria help your digestive system remain in balance, and they strengthen your immune system. I know you’ve seen the plentiful commercials about probiotics, but the bottom line is they are all beneficial just pick one. If you don’t like pills, then old faithful is still around – yogurt. I love Greek yogurt; and Activia has a special blend just for what we’re talking about here.

If you haven’t already, try one of these to supplement your nutrition plan as well.

3)       Ok, now we’re feeling good and more energetic – let’s put that energy to good use. Try getting up a few extra minutes early to get centered, mediate, pray, or just think. And then get moving! I don’t know about you, but it’s extremely difficult for me to work out in the summer. My routine diminishes significantly, it’s just too hot and humid here (Atlanta). Mhmm, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. But seriously, get out for a brisk walk or jog. Your whole being will feel better.

4)      Clean on the inside, clean on the outside. Our skin and hair takes a beating in cold weather and then the drying heat that keeps us warm doesn’t help at all. So it may be time to choose a thicker or more fortified hair conditioner and a thick body cream as opposed to lotion. I would also recommend switching from traditional lipstick to a nice gloss (they’re in anyway). If gloss isn’t your thing, put a little of that cod liver oil I mentioned before on your lips before adding the lipstick. This will help to keep your pucker supple and smooth. Olive oil and castor oil will do the same thing.

We may want to alter our hair styles a bit as well. For instance flat ironing is great, but why compound the issue of dry conditions with even more heat. Embrace your texture for the fall/winter. Roller sets, pin ups, braiding, or try that wig you’ve been imagining yourself in, are just a few protective style options. 

I hope this gives you a good starting point to a healthy season change. You’re beautiful and deserve to stay that way.
